A Brief History of the Chain Mail Coif

The chain mail coif (pronounced "kwof") was a protective head and neck covering for the medieval knight. It was usually covered by a helm for added protection. Hand-made of interwoven iron rings, the mail coif would have been very painful to wear without the addition of thick, soft padding beneath it.

Mail was lightweight and versatile, useful for defense against slashing weapons, but it could be pierced if struck by a sharp object with enough force. Also, mail could not prevent bone breaks, concussions and internal injuries to the wearer when struck hard enough by a blunt weapon such as a jousting lance, club or mace.

Still, it was an early, very desirable form of protection for those who could afford it. The production of mail was very costly and labor intensive. Mail garments were so expensive that they were available almost exclusively to knights with enough wealth to obtain them. Common soldiers rarely possessed such protection.

There were variations on coifs, including the aventail that could be attached to a helm. It was important that the knight wear something over his neck, and the mail had to extend down past his collarbone and over his shoulders, to cover the neck opening of the hauberk or byrnie (shirt).

Even with the advent of full suits of plate armor in circa 1440 A.D., the mail coif continued to be an important component of the well-dressed knight’s wardrobe.
