HISTORY OF PLATE ARMOR GAUNTLETS

" Throw down the gauntlet "

This is an idiom where someone can express an invitation to argue, fight or compete with you. To "throw down the gauntlet" is to issue a challenge. This saying originated from gauntlet wearing knights that wanted to challenge a fellow knight or enemy to a duel by throwing one of his gauntlets on the ground. Accepting the challenge, the opposing knight would pick up the gauntlet.

Since hands and arms were extremely exposed in hand-to-hand combat, Gauntlets became a critical piece of armor during the middle ages. Gauntlet is a name referring to various styles of gloves - in particular to those with an extended cuff covering part of the forearm. Starting off historically, gauntlets were constructed in forms ranging from flexible fabric and leather to chain mail and plate armor. Plate gauntlets dominated and eventually replaced the earlier forms of mail, fabric, and leather gloves around the 14th century.

Gothic armor was fully jointed plate armor developed in the first half of the 15th century. Its emphasis on vertical lines, arches, and its spiky silhouette characteristics was comparable of Gothic architecture. Curves, fluting and ridges were modeled in order to enhance the strength of armor and deflect arrows and other weaponry of the era. Also, the plates were sometimes embossed to give the impression of knuckles which may have been decorative, but also served to give more reinforcement. One of the best attributes of Gothic armor was that it conformed to the human body providing protection with minimal weight and limitation of movement.

Through the 17th century, plate armor started to decline in the age of the musketeer. No longer did warriors have use for the heavy suits because of lack of protection with the increased use of muskets and other firearms. During this time more of the foot soldiers/infantry used plate armor & gauntlets as protection for hand to hand combat and cavalry were armed with guns. As weaponry advanced, slowly soldiers had little to no use for the majority of body armor previously used by knights of the middle ages.
